The Process- Part 2
Okay, lets move on to inking---

First I threw in a silhouetted bunch of pipes in the foreground to increase the sense of depth.

Then I go through the page with my fattest nib doing all the outlines and foreground stuff. Here I'm using a Copic liner .7

I hadn't realized that I forgot to draw Aquaman in panel two yet, but fortunately he wasn't vital. Kurt can write around my mistake. Just goes to show you need to pay attention...

II then work on the detail stuff with a Copic liner at .3.

I fill some blacks so I can tell what I'm doing...

Then I do the fine detail work with a Copic .1

Then I finish panel 3 and then add backgrounds. In panel 2 I just guesstimated the perspective...

From printout to scanning the process took about 3 hours. An easy page!

That's it for the physical work. Next post we enter the digital world!!

man, you make it look easy.

I admire your restraint on spotting blacks. My urge would be to fill that thing up.

Also, I'm way impressed with the range you pull out of the copic liners.

looking forward to the next installment.

Everything I've been doing these days has been in an effort to save time. I LOVE shading, but can't afford it right now. The Copics have a nice, flexible tip that helps give a small amount of expression to the line- especially the .3.

Three hours? Wow.

One of the things I admire about your style is that you don't mark tons of shadows on objects with your inks. Do you find that's something recent in the comic world since coloring is so advanced now?

Your Nightwing rocks, btw.

Three hours yes, but don't forget to add the ten years of practice on there.

I really enjoy putting in a lot of shadows and black areas, but it takes time. And yes, with a guy like Brad backing me up I don't have anything to worry about. With a style like this colors will make or break the work. You've gotta have someone competant following you.

I'd wondered about that particular format decision for awhile now. Good to finally have an answer for it; I'd just finally stumbled onto your LJ today...

One question - how tight are they on the depiction of the Superman symbol? I noticed in Up Up and Away, in some pieces, the symbol was raised a little off of his costume. Are you able to make it raised and 3-D like the Movie symbol, or are they very strict on that?

Depends on the editor really. There is no word from on high. I don't really like the film version, but the one I do is still raised, look closely at it in the final version of panel 3. I know Carlos has elected to stick with the traditional shield. Up to the artist really.
